Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji has dismissed recent calls by the Senate to scrap the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), arguing that the fund has been instrumental in the development of numerous public projects.
Speaking at ACK Kiangima in his constituency, Mukunji emphasized the importance of the NG-CDF in facilitating local development. He urged senators to instead focus on their oversight role over county governments, highlighting rampant excesses that result in significant taxpayer losses.
“The NG-CDF has had a tangible impact on the development of many public projects. Senators should concentrate on overseeing counties and curbing the widespread excesses that cost taxpayers dearly,” Mukunji stated.
Despite not being given a chance to address the congregation at the church event, Mukunji took the opportunity to praise the influence of Gen Z on the nation’s political discourse. He noted that the younger generation has brought a new level of sobriety to national discussions, helping to depoliticize the country.
“The Gen Zs have pushed the nation into a new dispensation that is sobering up our discussions and helping to depoliticize the country,” he remarked.
Mukunji also applauded President William Ruto for ending the practice of fundraising by public officials. However, he called on the President to find ways to support those in desperate need of medical fundraisers, even as the country works towards establishing comprehensive health insurance.
“The President’s move to end fundraising by public officials is commendable. But we must also find ways to support the sick who desperately need fundraisers until our health insurance system is fully in place,” Mukunji urged.
In his address, Mukunji also appealed to leaders to increase their engagement with the youth. He encouraged the youth to avoid condemning those who opposed the finance bill, noting that even the President ultimately rejected it.
“Leaders should create more engagement opportunities with the youth. And I urge the youth not to condemn those who voted against the finance bill since the President himself rejected it,” Mukunji concluded.
Mukunji’s remarks come at a time of heightened debate over the future of the NG CDF and the role of youth in shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
