Former Marathon World No.1 Lawrence Cherono Banned for Seven Years for Anti-Doping Violations

Lawrence Cherono, once celebrated as the world’s top marathoner, has been handed a severe seven-year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after admitting to multiple Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs). The 35-year-old Kenyan, renowned for his two major marathon victories and impressive career ranking, confessed to breaching regulations, including tampering with evidence to mislead investigators.

Cherono’s infractions involve serious violations under the Anti-Doping Rules. He tested positive for the banned substance Trimetazidine in May 2022, triggering allegations of breaching ADR 2.1 and ADR 2.2 related to the presence and use of prohibited substances. Additionally, he faced charges under ADR 2.5 for tampering with doping control procedures by fabricating medical documents and providing false statements.

The AIU’s Head, Brett Clothier, emphasized the rigorous investigation that uncovered Cherono’s misconduct, stating, “This decision underscores the AIU’s unwavering commitment to clean sport. We leave no stone unturned in upholding integrity and fairness.”

Cherono’s suspension began on 16 July 2022, the date of his provisional suspension following the positive test. Despite attempts to justify the positive result with various explanations, including implicating colleagues and alleging accidental ingestion, investigations revealed inconsistencies and falsification of medical records.

Collaborating with the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), the AIU meticulously dissected Cherono’s claims, ultimately discovering that documents submitted as proof were falsified. Efforts to obtain genuine medical records confirming his wife’s treatment were repeatedly obstructed until legal action compelled the medical center to disclose the truth.

“This exhaustive investigation, spanning two years, has been crucial in safeguarding the integrity of sport,” Clothier concluded. The AIU’s thoroughness in handling Cherono’s case underscores its resolve to protect athletes who compete honestly.

Cherono’s fall from grace serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of doping in athletics, reinforcing the AIU’s role in maintaining fair play and preserving the essence of competitive sports.
