Maasai Mara Hotels Achieve 95% Occupancy Ahead of Wildebeest Migration Peak Season

Wildebeest Migration

Hotels, lodges, and camps in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve have recorded 95% bed occupancy from early bookings as they gear up for the annual wildebeest migration season. This peak season, which runs from July to September, sees millions of wildebeests cross from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya, drawing thousands of international and local tourists.

Mara Chief Park Warden Stephen Minis noted a significant increase in tourist numbers in recent weeks, with hotel bookings inside and around the reserve signaling booming business. Security has been heightened with intensified ranger patrols to maintain law and order and ensure all tour vans adhere to park regulations.

Sarova Mara Camp General Manager Jayne Kiragu expressed optimism despite challenges such as heavy rains that affected some camps and persistent demonstrations against the government. She reported that Sarova Mara’s 75 tents, including 52 deluxe tents, 20 club tents, and 2-bedroom family tents, are fully booked for the next three months. Kiragu, who recently joined Sarova Mara Camp, emphasized their commitment to enhancing tourism products and upgrading tents to offer clients an unparalleled experience.

Mara Managers Association Chairman Harrison Nampaso shared the industry’s positive outlook, preparing for the peak season with expectations of full bookings across all hotels. He also thanked the county government for swiftly repairing roads and bridges damaged by flooding ahead of the high season.

The wildebeest migration, often referred to as the world’s eighth wonder, continues to be a major draw for the region, promising a lucrative season for the Maasai Mara hospitality industry.
