A tragic train derailment in the Duka Moja area of Kajiado West sub-county has resulted in one fatality and left numerous passengers injured on Tuesday morning.

The passenger train, owned by Tata Chemicals Limited Magadi, was traveling from Magadi to Kajiado town, carrying over 100 passengers and goods. According to eyewitnesses, the train lost control as it approached a bridge around 8 am, veered off the tracks, and overturned.

The accident caused chaos and panic among passengers. Sixty-six individuals with minor injuries were quickly rushed to Kajiado County Referral Hospital, where they received treatment and were subsequently discharged. Ten others, who were critically injured, were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi for specialized care.

Kajiado Deputy Governor Martin Moshisho expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and extended his best wishes for the swift recovery of the injured. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families during this difficult time,” Moshisho stated.

The body of the deceased has been moved to the Kajiado Referral Hospital mortuary, where it will undergo a postmortem examination. Authorities are investigating the cause of the derailment to prevent similar incidents in the future.
