The Ministry of Agriculture has introduced four pivotal agricultural sub-sector policies aimed at addressing critical constraints and enhancing the performance of Kenya’s agriculture sector.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi announced the policies at a launch event held at a Nairobi hotel on Wednesday. The policies include the Kenya Agricultural Extension Policy (KASEP) 2023, the National Agricultural Insurance Policy 2023, the Phytosanitary Policy 2023, and the National Agricultural Mechanisation Policy 2024.
Linturi emphasized that these policies represent significant progress in establishing the macro-economic foundations necessary for agricultural transformation and growth. He noted that transforming and growing the agricultural sector requires sound policies and strategies targeted at solidifying these economic foundations.
“These policies focus on reducing the country’s reliance on food imports by enhancing farm productivity, creating a better environment for private investment, promoting value-added agro-based products, and improving markets for Kenya’s produce both domestically and internationally,” Linturi said.
The CS highlighted that the Kenya Agricultural Extension Policy (KASEP) 2023 will be instrumental in revitalizing the provision of extension and advisory services, which are crucial for improved agricultural productivity and overall sector development.
“A well-functioning agricultural extension service operated by the public and private sectors is critical for transforming subsistence farming into vibrant, commercial, and modern farming, attaining food security, improving incomes, creating wealth, and generating employment opportunities,” Linturi added.
