Ethiopian Airlines has announced it received a notice from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority regarding the suspension of all flights to Eritrea. The notice, dated July 21, 2024, indicates the suspension will take effect on September 30, 2024.
The Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority cites “consistent and persistent malicious trading practices” by Ethiopian Airlines as the reason for the suspension. Allegations include systematic and organized passengers’ luggage theft, pilferage, damage, prolonged delays, and loss without compensation. Additionally, they accuse Ethiopian Airlines of unjustified and unwarranted price hikes and other irregularities. Despite repeated calls for rectification, no improvements have been made, leading to this suspension.
Ethiopian Airlines is seeking clarification from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority and aims to resolve the issue amicably and promptly. In a statement, Ethiopian Airlines said, “We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.”
As a member of Star Alliance, Ethiopian Airlines remains committed to maintaining high service standards and cooperation within the international aviation community. Passengers who have booked flights to Eritrea are advised to stay tuned for updates and to contact Ethiopian Airlines for any concerns or alternative arrangements.
This development represents a significant disruption in the regional aviation sector, with many closely monitoring the situation.
