In a candid revelation, lawyer Donald B. Kipkorir shared the behind-the-scenes efforts that saved former Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u from arrest during his tenure as Central Bank Governor. Kipkorir disclosed that Prof. Ndung’u, who had fallen out with then-President Uhuru Kenyatta over alleged procurement corruption, sought his help to avoid arrest.
“Because fear is gone, let me tell you about our dismissed National Treasury CS Finance Minister Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u. As Central Bank Governor, he fell out with President Uhuru Kenyatta. The Government was going to arrest him on alleged procurement corruption. He came to me. I went to Court & stopped the arrest,” Kipkorir stated.
He further elaborated on his efforts to mediate the conflict by meeting President Uhuru Kenyatta three times, both locally and abroad, to convince him to forgive Prof. Ndung’u. As a result, Prof. Ndung’u was able to serve his full term as Central Bank Governor, becoming the first in a long time to do so.
Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u’s career took another turn when President William Ruto appointed him as CS National Treasury. However, Kipkorir expressed disappointment over the lack of appreciation shown by Prof. Ndung’u, noting that he rarely answered or returned calls, only responding with messages that he was busy.
“Had he been arrested, his tenure at CBK would have ignominiously ended. He wouldn’t have been made a Minister. Yet he forgot all these. I pray that in his next stage in life, he learns appreciation & humility. You can’t be too busy for those that have held your hand!” Kipkorir concluded.
This revelation sheds light on the intricate dynamics and personal interventions that influence Kenya’s political landscape, highlighting the importance of gratitude and humility in leadership.
