A massive landslide has struck Baringo North Sub County, displacing 22 households and causing extensive damage to farms, food crops, and tree plantations. The landslide occurred on Monday night in Kapkwang village, Kabartonjo ward, sweeping away homes and essential facilities such as latrines and water systems, leaving many families homeless.

The county’s head of disaster and response management, Michael Baimet, visited the affected area to assess the damage. He advised the displaced families to relocate to safer grounds to prevent further losses. Baimet, accompanied by area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Simon Kiplagat, assured the affected households that the county government would provide food and non-food items to help alleviate their situation.

This latest landslide comes just a week after a deadly landslide in Kasisit and Kapkombe sub-locations in Saimo location claimed the lives of five people. The victims were buried by debris after their houses were swept away during the night following heavy rains that have been pounding much of Baringo County. Some of the bodies were recovered far downstream from the initial landslide site.

In a related incident last month, a section of the Kasoiyo-Tenges-Eldama Ravine tarmac road was closed after a landslide swept away part of the road at Borowonin area. The closure remains in effect, with Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) official Danstan Nyachiro urging motorists to use alternative routes while urgent repairs are carried out on the damaged section.

As heavy rains continue to batter the region, local authorities are on high alert, urging residents in vulnerable areas to take precautionary measures and stay safe.
