KCB RFC has shifted its focus to the fifteens version of the game expected to kick off in November after finishing third overall at the concluded 2024 National Sevens Circuit in Nakuru.
The Andrew Amonde-led side managed to garner 94 points. They finished ninth at the Prinsloo Sevens after seeing off varsity lads Daystar Falcons 38-0 to stamp their authority in the Challenger Cup.
Speaking after the event, coach Andrew Amonde said: “We had to dig deep on the second day after not playing well on the first day. Big up to the boys who stepped up and showed the character we wanted them to show. So, it is just a matter of building the consistency in them and picking what we have learned here and taking it to the fifteens.”
KCB, who were the defending champions, managed to win the Kabeberi sevens in Nairobi, they fell short to Kenya Harlequin at the Driftwood 7s losing 12-15 to the Ngong road side. The Bankers finished fifth at the Dala sevens after edging out Nondies 31-0, They also lost 12-17 to Kenya harlequin at the Kakamega Sevens. In the opening leg of the circuit at Christies, KCB finished fifth defeating MMUST 22-14.
“Compared to last season, we did not do well considering we were the defending champions. I also think the other teams have improved. The next time we are preparing for this circuit, we will start from the beginning, we started very slow and it ended up costing us on the last day. The fifteens season is a long one, for us is to bring everyone on board, especially the new guys coming in and building the team we want,” added Amonde.
At the Prinsloo sevens, KCB ousted Mombasa RFC 39-0 in the Challenger Cup quarterfinal before beating another varsity side Catholic university (CUEA) 22- 12 cruise to the final where they also defeated Daystar Falcons 38-0 to finish ninth at the last leg of the series.
