President William Ruto has announced that National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) will play a key role in the restoration of the Nairobi River Basin, as part of the government’s Climate WorX initiative set to begin on October 1.
The initiative aims to transform the heavily polluted Nairobi River into a commercial and recreational asset, aligning with the city’s status as Kenya’s capital and the global environmental capital, being the host city for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
“Nairobi, as the capital of Kenya and host of UNEP, cannot continue to have a river in such a polluted state. The current condition of the Nairobi River does not reflect the image of our country,” President Ruto emphasized during a meeting with NGAOs at the Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete.
The restoration of the Nairobi River is part of broader government efforts to address environmental degradation, improve public health, and elevate Nairobi’s global standing.
