Nairobi County Bans Hawking in Central Business District

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

The Nairobi County Government has announced an immediate ban on hawking within the Central Business District (CBD). The directive, issued on Thursday, restricts hawking activities to specific backstreets and lanes, with operations allowed only from Monday to Saturday, between 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM.

In a public notice, Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration outlined the designated areas for hawking, stretching from Tom Mboya Street to Kirinyaga Road.

“No hawking will be allowed on the main streets and roads, including Moi Avenue, Haile Selassie Avenue, Kenneth Matiba Road, Latema Road, Ronald Ngala Street, Mfangano Street, Hakati Road, and River Road,” emphasized Godfrey Akumali, the Acting County Secretary and Head of County Public Service.

Akumali also clarified that all walkways within the CBD are exclusively reserved for pedestrians and are not authorized for trading activities.

“The general public is reminded that any violation of this directive will result in prosecution under Nairobi City County Government by-laws,” he added.

This move aims to ensure smooth pedestrian flow and maintain order within the city’s central hub
