The African Union Executive Council concluded its 45th Ordinary Session on July 19, 2024, following deliberations on crucial issues to advance the political and socio-economic development and integration of the continent. The two-day ministerial meeting featured elections and appointments to various AU organs and institutions.
Key appointments included:
- African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights: Three judges were appointed for six-year terms. Justice Blaise Tchikaya (Congo) and Justice Stella Isibhakhomen Anukam (Nigeria) were re-elected for second terms, while Justice Duncan Gaswaga (Uganda) was newly appointed.
- Pan African University (PAU) Council: Kenneth Kamwi Matengu (Namibia) was re-elected as President for a three-year term starting October 2024. The PAU Council oversees the policy, finances, and operations of the university, aiming to enhance African higher education and research.
- African Space Council: Fernand Guy Isseri (Cameroon) was appointed for a four-year term. The election of a female member from the Central Region was postponed to February 2025. The council coordinates the African Space Agency’s activities and advances space science and technology on the continent.
- African Union Advisory Board against Corruption (AUABC): Nadia Annouz (Morocco) was appointed for a six-year term. The board promotes measures to prevent and combat corruption across Africa.
- African Union Board of External Auditors (BoEA): New members appointed as Heads of Supreme Audit Institutions include representatives from Mauritius (Eastern Region), Eswatini (Southern Region), Ivory Coast (Western Region), and Equatorial Guinea (Central Region). They will serve for financial years 2024 and 2025.
These appointments are part of the AU’s efforts to strengthen its institutions and promote governance, development, and integration across Africa.
