Bandari FC clinched their first win of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Kenya Premier League (KPL) 2024/2025 season, defeating Mara Sugar FC 1-0 at Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday.

Shasiri Nahimana scored the match’s only goal in the 35th minute with a powerful shot that deflected off Mara Sugar defender Drona Openda, giving Bandari the edge in a closely contested game.

After a 1-1 draw in their season opener against Posta Rangers, Bandari’s relentless attack in the first half kept Mara Sugar on the back foot. Despite creating several chances, Nahimana’s goal remained the sole breakthrough.

Mara Sugar came out stronger in the second half, dominating possession and launching attempts to equalize. However, Bandari’s solid defense held firm, preventing Mara from getting on the scoreboard.

Bandari Coach Ken Odhiambo expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s performance, despite the victory. “The pace was not up to standard, and if we improve that, our next opponents will be in big trouble,” Odhiambo said, downplaying the early-season win.

Mara Sugar Coach George Midenyo acknowledged his team’s struggle in the first half but praised their resilience in the second. “The boys did their best, but an unfortunate mistake cost us. We are the underdogs, but our focus remains on avoiding relegation,” he remarked.

Bandari now prepares for a tough clash against Gor Mahia next Sunday, while Mara Sugar will face Nairobi City Stars on Saturday.
