The government has restored peace and calm in the volatile 68-kilometer Malaso-Morijo belt along the border of Samburu and Baringo Counties following rampant cattle rustling in the last one year.
Samburu County Commissioner (CC) John Cheruiyot said that a multi-agency security operation has seen the reduction of cattle rustling incidences between communities from the two counties that often left a trail of death and destruction.
He assured security to residents who had fled their homes for fear of attacks adding that the government has deployed 533 National Police Reservists (NPR) to assist in securing the area from further attacks.
“Residents who had fled their homes had formed 23 fortified camps locally known as Lororas where they spend the night after grazing and tilling their land. I want to assure them that the government is dedicated to restoring peace in their homes,” he said.
The CC noted that all schools in the area have been re-opened apart from SoitPus primary school in Morijo which was set to be opened soon.
Cheruiyot further noted that the national government has been distributing relief food to the affected families living in the fortified camps to improve nutrition for the children, elderly, expectant and lactating mothers.
Speaking on Sunday at Loibor Ngare area after visiting the displaced families, Samburu Woman Representative Pauline Lenguris commended the security operation for restoring security in the area adding that the operation should continue even after residents move back to their homes.
Lenguris also distributed beddings and iron sheets to 28 families whose houses were torched during the skirmishes to help them start afresh.
