NAIROBI, Kenya, July 3, 2024 — The Council of Governors has issued a strong appeal to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to retract the proposed salary increases for state officers within county governments. This appeal follows the SRC Gazette Notice No. 177 dated August 9, 2023, which outlines the remuneration and benefits for state officers, including those in county governments.
In a press statement released today, the Council of Governors expressed deep concern over the timing of the proposed increments, highlighting the challenging economic conditions currently facing the country. “We note with great concern that the country is currently facing harsh economic times that will require austerity measures and fiscal discipline and responsibility,” the statement read.
The Council emphasized the need for fiscal prudence and sustainability, urging the SRC to immediately withdraw the proposed salary increments for all county state officers, which include Governors, Deputy Governors, and County Executive Committee Members.
The Chairperson of the Council of Governors, Anne Waiguru, underscored the importance of fiscal responsibility during these tough economic times. “This is our noble duty even as we collectively reflect on a prudent, fiscal sustainability strategy for the country,” said Waiguru.
The call for restraint comes as part of broader efforts to ensure that fiscal policies align with the current economic realities, emphasizing the need for austerity measures and responsible financial management at all levels of government.
