The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has today apprehended five of the thirteen suspects implicated in the embezzlement of public funds amounting to Kes. 450,138,000 at the State Department for Correctional Services. The charges relate to fraudulent tenders for the alleged supply of food and rations to various prison stations by seventeen companies associated with the officials during the Financial Years 2016/2017 and 2017/2018.
The arrested suspects, who are currently being processed at the EACC Integrity Center Police Station, will be detained at Kilimani Police Station. They are scheduled to appear before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Friday, 19th July 2024, at 9:00 am.
The individuals arrested include:
- Sarah Kemunto Kerandi, Chief Finance Officer
- Moses Juma Sirengo, Principal Accountant
- Jack Nyariango Ogao, Accountant
- Maureen Ndungwa, Director of one of the companies involved
- Eric Kipkirui Mutai, a cleaner at the State Department for Correctional Services and Director of seven companies that received over Kes. 257 million of the embezzled amount
The EACC has also issued a directive for the remaining eight suspects to report to the EACC Nairobi Integrity Center Offices or the nearest EACC Office no later than Friday, 19th July 2024, at 8:00 am. The individuals yet to be apprehended are:

- Humphrey Wende Abok, Accountant

- Ochoki Joseph Omaiyo, Prison Warder
- Stephen Kisonzo Mulwa, Director of eight companies involved
- Joseph Kariuki Mwangi, Director of one of the companies involved
The Commission reiterated its commitment to its mandate, emphasizing that it will persist in enforcing the law against all individuals involved in the theft of public funds.
