Ethiopia has issued a directive to all diplomatic and consular missions, as well as regional and international organizations based in Addis Ababa, regarding the importation of vehicles.
In an official communication dated August 19, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized Ethiopia’s commitment to combating climate change and promoting renewable energy. As part of this commitment, the Ministry has prohibited the importation of vehicles with internal combustion engines that use petrol or diesel. The directive applies specifically to those with diplomatic privileges in the country.
The Ministry’s announcement highlights the pressing global challenges posed by climate change and underscores Ethiopia’s dedication to reducing emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy sources. The directive mandates that only electric vehicles (EVs) will be allowed for importation under the diplomatic privileges accorded by the government.
This move aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the use of sustainable energy. The Ethiopian government has been taking steps to promote the adoption of electric vehicles as part of its broader strategy to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Diplomatic and consular missions, along with regional and international organizations operating in Addis Ababa, are expected to comply with this new regulation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated its commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure a smooth transition to the use of electric vehicles for all diplomats and international personnel in the country.
This directive is seen as a critical step in Ethiopia’s broader environmental policy and its efforts to lead by example in the global fight against climate change. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its high regard and assurance of cooperation to all diplomatic entities in implementing this directive.
