Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has landed in Port Sudan, Sudan, marking the beginning of a crucial working visit aimed at addressing stability concerns in the region.
Upon arrival, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was warmly received by Sudan’s de facto leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
The visit comes against the backdrop of ongoing conflict in Sudan, primarily between factions led by General al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemetti), leader of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The conflict, which escalated in April 2023, has led to widespread violence and instability, exacerbating Sudan’s humanitarian crisis. At its core are disputes over the integration of the RSF into the regular army and broader disagreements regarding Sudan’s transition to civilian rule.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit underscores Ethiopia’s role in regional stability and its commitment to facilitating dialogue between Sudanese factions. The discussions are expected to focus on finding diplomatic solutions to mitigate tensions and promote peace and stability in Sudan.
