The Giga Kitchen, a cornerstone of Nairobi County’s School Feeding Program “Dishi Na County,” has made a significant impact by serving over 60,000 nutritious meals daily to public primary schools in the area. This initiative, spearheaded by Food 4 Education, ensures that children receive hot, nutritious meals to curb malnutrition, boost academic performance, and encourage school enrollment.

The Giga Kitchen employs sustainable energy infrastructure, using eco-friendly scrap wood briquettes to power two boilers that heat water and generate steam necessary for cooking the vast number of meals. This innovative approach not only supports the environment but also helps sustain the high output required to feed so many students.

Currently, 200,000 children are enlisted in the “Dishi Na County” program and will continue to receive daily meals. The construction of seven additional central kitchens is at an advanced stage, and once completed, the program will benefit 310,000 children.

The “Dishi Na County” program has had a transformative effect on the community, creating job opportunities for local residents. These jobs have positively impacted families in poor neighborhoods, providing stable employment and ensuring that school-going children have access to nutritious meals for just 5 shillings, facilitated by the convenient tap-to-eat wristband system.

The success of the Giga Kitchen and its satellite kitchens highlights the vital role that well-structured feeding programs play in supporting education and alleviating hunger among young learners in Nairobi. This initiative stands as a testament to the power of community-driven solutions in addressing key societal challenges.
