Farmers at Kagwe Tea Factory in Lari and Gatundu South, Kiambu County, have called off their three-day tea plucking boycott after their earnings were increased from Ksh 44.25 to Ksh 50.92 per kilogram. The farmers had protested a low bonus payout announced by the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), accusing factory management of failing to honor their promise of higher payments despite increased production.
The protest was resolved after KTDA Zone 1 Board Director Gabriel Kagombe assured farmers that plans were underway to sell 300,000 kilos of unsold orthodox tea, improving their pay. The farmers welcomed the increase and vowed to return to work.
Kagwe Tea Factory now leads the region in payments, followed by other factories in Kiambu County.
