Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for #SabaSaba to be recognized as a national holiday to honour the heroes who fought for democratic space in Kenya. Musyoka emphasized the importance of acknowledging both past and present efforts in the struggle for democracy.

“Kenya’s Gen Z have carried the struggle of #SabaSaba and are our heroines and heroes. Their sacrifices will not be forgotten. You have changed Kenya forever,” Musyoka stated.

As the nation reflects on #SabaSaba, Musyoka posed a critical question: “We ask on this #SabaSaba, are we a democracy?” This query invites contemplation on the current state of democratic governance in Kenya and the ongoing efforts to uphold democratic principles.

History of #SabaSaba

The first Saba Saba protests took place on 7th July, 1990, demanding multiparty democracy during the reign of President Daniel arap Moi. These protests marked a significant moment in Kenya’s history, leading to eventual political reforms and the establishment of multiparty democracy. However, after the change of guard in 2002, such protests gradually diminished.

Recent Protests

In the past two weeks, Kenya has witnessed protests against the Finance Bill 2024. Unfortunately, these protests were infiltrated by goons, leading to clashes with police officers and resulting in the deaths of more than 40 youths. The recent events highlight ongoing tensions and the continuous struggle for democratic rights and governance in Kenya.
