Kenya Power Updates 2 Million Prepaid Meters in Major Campaign

Kenya Power has successfully updated 2 million prepaid meters in the last three weeks as part of its Update Token Meter Yako Campaign. The initiative, which targets a total of 7.4 million prepaid meters, aims to ensure customers continue to have access to electricity by updating their meter software.

“The numbers are encouraging, and we are happy to note that our customers have taken the call to update their meters seriously. We are almost at 30% of the targeted meters, and we are optimistic that all our prepaid customers will have updated their meters by the 31st August deadline,” said Kenya Power’s Managing Director & CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror.

The campaign is part of a global effort to update prepaid meters that use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS), a universal method ensuring the security of tokens. Kenya Power has set the end of August 2024 as the deadline for updating all STS-compliant meters within its network.

To ensure the update process runs smoothly, the company has adopted a phased approach. Customers receive an SMS notification when their meter is scheduled for an update, followed by update codes sent upon the purchase of an electricity token. This method helps prevent system overload and ensures a smooth process.

“The phased approach has ensured that the prepaid system is not overloaded with customer requests for the update codes. This has minimized challenges such as system delays and made it easier to purchase tokens and access the update codes. We encourage all customers to update their meter once they receive the codes,” added Dr. (Eng.) Siror.

Customers can also access their update codes through Kenya Power’s self-service platform *977#, which serves as a backup in case the SMS notification is lost.

The update will not affect existing tokens already loaded into the meter. However, customers are advised to load any unutilized tokens before updating their meters to prevent them from becoming invalid.

Kenya Power is actively incorporating feedback into the campaign to ensure all prepaid customers are fully empowered to update their meters once scheduled. The company remains committed to ensuring that the transition is as smooth and efficient as possible for all its users.
