The Kenyan government has issued a strong statement addressing the recent wave of unrest that has gripped the nation. In a press release, Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration Kithure Kindiki outlined the government’s stance on the ongoing “Occupy Everywhere” demonstrations, which have escalated into violent riots.

On June 25, 2024, unprecedented civil unrest erupted in Nairobi and several other towns, leading to loss of lives and destruction of property worth billions of shillings. The chaos culminated in an attempt to burn down the Parliament Buildings.

Initially, the protests were a democratic expression of public disapproval of the Finance Bill 2024, which ultimately led to the bill’s termination. However, the situation has since deteriorated, with criminal gangs exploiting the protests to incite violence and cause widespread destruction.

Despite the bill’s termination, these criminal elements have continued to disrupt public order, commit arson, obstruct public transport, and terrorize the public. The police have been commended for their professionalism and restraint in managing these highly provocative situations. The government has assured the public that any claims of unlawful conduct by law enforcement officers will be investigated, and appropriate action will be taken.

Security agencies remain vigilant, working to intercept and thwart threats to the public and critical infrastructure. The government is committed to bringing the planners, executors, and financiers of these large-scale arson attacks and violent crimes to justice.

Cabinet Secretary Kindiki also highlighted that the organizers of the current violence are planning further disruptions in Nairobi, Mombasa, and other parts of the country later this week. He emphasized that the government will take all necessary measures to end this reign of terror and impunity.

“The Government is determined to stop criminals aiming to terrorize the public and harm Kenya, notwithstanding attempts to politicize crime,” stated Kindiki. “This reign of terror against the people of Kenya and the impunity of dangerous criminal gangs must end at whatever cost.”

This strong stance underscores the Kenyan government’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the country, ensuring that law and order prevail in the face of ongoing challenges.
