Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has issued a press statement to address recent comments made by President William Ruto during a televised live broadcast dubbed the “The Presidential Roundtable.”
The President accused the KNCHR of disseminating false information regarding a supposed massacre in Githurai last week.
In their statement, the KNCHR clarified that they had not released any data about Githurai and emphasized that they are still in the process of verifying the events in Githurai, Rongai, Migori, Nakuru, and other regions.
“As a statutory body mandated to protect and promote Human Rights, the Commission has been closely monitoring the demonstrations by Wananchi against the Finance Bill, 2024, since Tuesday, June 18, 2024,” said Roseline Odede, Chairperson of the KNCHR.
She further stated that as of the latest data, there have been 24 reported deaths since the protests began, up from the 22 deaths reported in their last statement.
The KNCHR reiterated their condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured during the protests. They also affirmed their commitment to ensuring that justice prevails and human rights are upheld across the country.
The Commission’s clarification comes amid heightened tensions and ongoing demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024, with the public demanding accountability and transparency from the government.
