In the wake of nationwide demonstrations, Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani has called on the youth in Diani and Msambweni Subcounty to uphold the law and serve as peace ambassadors. The area, renowned for its tourism investments and attractions, has long been a vital source of income for the local community.
Governor Achani’s appeal comes after a tumultuous week of countrywide protests triggered by the passage of the controversial 2024/2025 Finance Bill by the National Assembly. The protests resulted in deaths, extensive property damage, and business disruptions. Criminal gangs exploited the unrest, causing further chaos and injuries in Diani.
Addressing over 204 community company directors at Diani Forest Lodge, Governor Achani cautioned the youth against actions that disrupt peace and harm the local economy. She emphasized the critical role tourism plays in the region’s financial stability.
“We must be fair to our president, who has withdrawn the bill entirely. Let’s give him time to put everything in order,” Achani stated.
She urged the youth not to be swayed by selfish politicians seeking to exploit the situation for their gain. “Fellow youths, this country cannot be built through violence. Let’s embrace dialogue and communication as the only way to move the nation forward,” Achani added.
Governor Achani also called on security agencies in the county to be vigilant and take action against criminal gangs that have been terrorizing locals and visitors. She urged residents to report any criminal activities to the authorities to help maintain peace and safety in Diani.
By fostering a cooperative relationship between the youth, local residents, and law enforcement, Achani hopes to preserve the region’s prosperity and ensure a secure environment for both locals and tourists.
