Tragedy struck the Kanga area in Rongo Subcounty when a 750-meter wall of the Choppa gold mine collapsed, resulting in the confirmed deaths of two individuals. The incident occurred while 18 miners were working within the mine.
Rescue operations were swiftly initiated, leading to the successful extraction of six miners from the debris. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, two miners were pronounced dead. Over ten miners remain trapped in the collapsed mine, with rescue teams working tirelessly to reach them.
The four miners who were rescued are currently receiving medical treatment at Rongo Subcounty Hospital. The Rongo Subcounty assistant commissioner has confirmed the incident, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the ongoing peril faced by the trapped miners. The commissioner is appealing for additional support from external sources to bolster the ongoing rescue efforts.
