Nakuru County is gearing up for an exciting two-day basketball tournament scheduled for August 10th and 11th, 2024. Organized in collaboration with Daraja 360 and the Afro Hoops Premier League, the event will unfold at the Nakuru County Empowerment Center in Bondeni estate.
The tournament aims to not only promote sports but also to foster youth development, community engagement, and economic impact through skill enhancement. Spearheaded by County Chief Officer for Youth, Sports, and Talents, Alex Maina, the initiative seeks to leverage basketball as a catalyst for social change and opportunities for local youth.
In a recent meeting at the Empowerment Center, Maina, alongside representatives from Afro Hoops led by Regina Kamoche and Dorothy Otieno, discussed strategies for the upcoming event. Kamoche emphasized the transformative power of investing in Afro Hoops, highlighting basketball’s role in instilling vital life skills like teamwork and discipline, and steering youth away from negative influences such as crime and substance abuse.
Furthermore, Kamoche noted the potential economic benefits of hosting sports tournaments, including boosting tourism and enhancing Nakuru County’s global visibility, which could attract further investments and development opportunities.
Expressing full departmental support, Maina commended Afro Hoops’ dedication to empowering youth through competitive sports. He pledged resources to ensure the tournament’s success and affirmed his confidence in its positive impact on athleticism, youth empowerment, and local economic growth.
As anticipation builds among residents and stakeholders, Nakuru County prepares to showcase its vibrant sports community and commitment to nurturing the next generation through sports excellence.
