Residents of Nyandiwa village in Homa Bay County were left in shock on Monday morning when arsonists set fire to a local posho mill, causing extensive damage and financial losses.

The mill’s owner, Dickens Oswago, reported that the assailants gained entry by cutting through an iron sheet wall. The attack resulted in the destruction of the mill’s engine, which was filled with fuel, leading to rapid and severe fire damage. Oswago estimates the total loss at over Sh200,000.

Oswago recounted the harrowing experience, saying, “I was awakened at about 2 a.m. by my mother’s screams, who was shouting that the posho mill was on fire. I rushed to the scene but found that the mill was already badly damaged.”

The mill, which was crucial for Oswago’s livelihood, provided essential income for feeding his family and educating his children. He has called on law enforcement to investigate the incident and hold the perpetrators accountable.

“I have recorded a statement with the police. This attack has not only violated my rights but also devastated my means of supporting my family,” Oswago said.

Kadwet Sub-Location Assistant Chief Zachary Were confirmed that police are investigating the case. They have discovered a mobile phone and pliers at the scene, which were likely used by the attackers to break into the mill. The phone is expected to assist in tracing the suspects.

“The mobile phone found at the scene is a key piece of evidence that should help in identifying those responsible,” Were stated. He emphasized the need for community cooperation to help apprehend the culprits and urged residents to avoid involvement in criminal activities.

“I encourage residents to work with us to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Were added.
