President William Ruto has directed the National Treasury to review the Gazette Notice issued on 9th August, 2023, by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) concerning the remuneration and benefits for State officers in the Executive of the National Government, the Senate, and the National Assembly.
This directive comes in light of the recent withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024 and the anticipated fiscal constraints for the current financial year.
President Ruto emphasized the need for the Executive and all arms of government to operate within their financial means during these challenging times. “This is a time, more than ever before, for the Executive and all arms of government to live within their means,” the President stated.
The Finance Bill 2024, which was withdrawn following significant public outcry and protests, had highlighted the economic pressures facing the nation. The withdrawal has necessitated a reassessment of government expenditures, including the remuneration of State officers.
The President’s directive aims to ensure that the government’s spending aligns with the current economic realities and fiscal limitations. The National Treasury is expected to conduct a thorough review and make the necessary adjustments to ensure sustainability and fiscal responsibility.
This move underscores the government’s commitment to prudent financial management and its responsiveness to the economic challenges faced by the country. The review is anticipated to set a precedent for financial discipline across all sectors of government.
