Residents of Kitengela are expressing their frustration and anger over the deplorable condition of Tropicana Road, which has become impassable due to the flow of raw sewer water. The road, a vital connection to a densely populated residential area, is now characterized by a nauseating stench and a free-flowing stream of filthy sewer water.
The road’s condition has deteriorated to the point where all forms of transport, including bodaboda services, have been paralyzed. Local traders have been forced to shut down their businesses due to the lack of accessibility and the growing fear of a cholera outbreak.
Despite numerous pleas from the residents, the situation has only worsened. The illegal discharge of raw sewer water has persisted, causing significant distress among the community. Residents place the blame on corrupt county government officers and public health officials, accusing them of turning a blind eye to the problem and even profiting from it.
According to the residents, rogue landlords have been illegally discharging sewer water by connecting pipes to the road, with the complicity of corrupt officials. These officials allegedly collaborate with the landlords, ignoring the blatant violations in exchange for bribes. Political interference is also cited as a contributing factor, as some of the apartments responsible for the waste discharge are owned by influential politicians who use intimidation to avoid accountability.
The community is now calling for urgent intervention from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and other state agencies to address the issue and restore the road. The lack of a proper sewer line in Kitengela has forced landlords to rely on exhausting soak pits, exacerbating the problem.
Residents are demanding immediate action to resolve the crisis and prevent further health hazards and disruptions to their daily lives.
