Several people are feared dead following a road accident that occurred at the Kipsitet Area at Koguta along the Nakuru-Muhoroni Highway on Monday.

The accident occurred after the Londiani-bound lorry lost control after hitting a porthole before ramming into the 14-seater matatu that was en route to Kisumu.

Preliminary reports suggested that about thirteen people lost their lives following the accident, with several others left nursing critical injuries.

A rescue operation was quickly scrambled to help rescue those trapped under the wreckage. The rescue team was comprised of police officers and the locals.

Footage circulating widely depicted the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) damaged extensively with its windows shattered and pieces of glass scattered all over the road.

Meanwhile, the lorry was damaged on its front side, with footage depicting the truck leaning on one of its sides with the windscreen completely broken.

While confirming the accident, Kericho County Commander Geoffrey Mayek revealed that the driver of the lorry fled the scene after causing the accident.

Mayek, however, noted that a probe had already been launched into the root cause of the occurrence. The deceased were moved to the St Vincent Mission Hospital.

The Muhoroni tragedy comes barely two days after 12 people died in a road accident that occurred at the Nithi Bridge along the Nairobi-Meru highway.

Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Zacchaeus Ng’eno who confirmed the incident revealed that the victims were passengers returning from a parental blessing ceremony in Meru.

According to the police commander, the driver was not well informed about the highway and was driving in the wrong lane when the crash occurred.

“So far, we are confirming that we have collected 12 bodies from this scene and two others injured. This accident involved two motor vehicles, one was headed towards Nairobi and the other towards Meru,” Ng’eno revealed.
