In an unprecedented move, employees of Standard Group’s radio stations—Radio Maisha, Spice FM, Berur FM, and Vybez Radio—have put all programming on hold, opting to play only music as they protest against unpaid wages.
The employees, who have not been paid since August 2023, have taken a stand by refusing to go on air and are demanding immediate action from the management. One employee, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed their frustration, saying, “We have been patient for 10 months, hoping the situation would improve. But nothing has changed, and we can’t continue working under these conditions.”
The Standard Group reported a significant financial loss of KSh 1.2 billion for the 2023/24 financial year, which has exacerbated the situation. The radio stations are currently devoid of any live presenters, with the employees congregating at the staff cafeteria from as early as 7:00 AM, waiting for a response from the management.
The employees’ sit-in at the cafeteria is a sign of their desperation and determination to seek redress. As the situation develops, many are watching to see how the Standard Group management will respond to the growing discontent among its staff.
The media company’s financial difficulties have not only affected radio station employees but have also raised concerns about the sustainability of its operations and the potential ripple effects on other departments.
For now, the airwaves of Radio Maisha, Vybez Radio, Spice FM, and Berur FM will continue to be filled with music, a silent yet powerful protest from a workforce demanding the respect and compensation they have earned.
