Suspected Child Traffickers Lynched by Mob in Butere

Child Trafficking

Two individuals suspected of child trafficking killed by an enraged mob cornered in the Elukokho area of Butere Sub County, Kakamega County.

According to Area Police Commander Julius Kiptoo, the victims, identified as of Somali origin, were part of a group attempting to abduct a class eight pupil from Buluanda Primary School.

Kiptoo reported that the swift action of the child who raised an alarm alerted local residents, who swiftly mobilized with crude weapons to confront the traffickers. In the ensuing chaos, the mob overwhelmed the suspects, resulting in fatal injuries for two while the remaining seven managed to escape with critical wounds, later rescued by police and rushed to Butere sub-county hospital for urgent medical attention.

The incident has sparked fear and outrage in the community, leading to the public setting ablaze the suspects’ vehicle, identified as a KCQ 386Q, which was allegedly intended for use in abductions. This comes in the wake of recent concerns over child abductions in the area, with a previous abduction case resolved just last week after diligent police efforts located the child in Mosoriot, subsequently reuniting her with her family in Butere.

“We suspect there may be accomplices assisting these criminals within our midst,” stated Kiptoo, urging vigilance among residents to identify and report suspicious activities promptly. The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to the Butere sub-county mortuary pending postmortem examinations.

Local authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to apprehend those responsible for the vigilante-style justice meted out today.
