The Tana Water Works Development Agency, the country’s leading water and sanitation agency, has unveiled an ambitious five-year strategic plan aimed at enhancing water and sanitation services in the Mountain region. The plan, with an estimated budget of nearly KSh64 billion, was launched during a colorful ceremony at Bantu Africa Resort and Spa near Nyeri town.
The strategic plan targets over four million residents across Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, and Tharaka Nithi counties. Among the key objectives is to increase access to quality water services from the current 57.8 percent to 90 percent by 2027. In terms of sanitation, the agency, chaired by Wanyaga Gathaka, aims to boost service access from 8.1 percent to 30 percent within the same period.
To achieve these goals, the agency plans to leverage technology, enhance partnerships and collaborations, increase stakeholder participation and engagement, and improve the customer satisfaction index from 88 percent to 90 percent by 2027. Other strategic objectives include enhancing financial sustainability, improving institutional processes and operations, and building human resource capacity.
The launch event was presided over by Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation Administration Secretary Stephen Kihara, representing Water and Sanitation Principal Secretary Dr. Julius Korir. The ceremony was attended by stakeholders from the region and beyond.
An elaborate action plan will guide the implementation of the strategic plan, detailing targets and responsibilities for each key activity and setting annual targets to ensure progress and accountability.
