The Ugandan government has announced the launch of a nationwide mass enrolment and renewal exercise for National Identity Cards (NIDs), targeting 17.2 million unregistered Ugandans and the renewal of 15.8 million existing NIDs.

This extensive exercise, spearheaded by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, will deploy 13,000 personnel across 10,717 parishes nationwide. Key preparations have been underway since February, including a rigorous selection process for the required workforce, system reviews, and the procurement of advanced biometric registration kits.

The new system, expected to be operational by October 15, 2024, will feature modernized equipment such as solar-powered kits with iris scanners. In the interim, Ugandans aged 16 and above are encouraged to register using the current system to ensure they are on the electoral roll by the November 30 deadline.

This initiative is crucial for maintaining accurate citizen records and ensuring seamless access to government services as the nation prepares for upcoming elections. The government reassures the public that no one will be disenfranchised due to system delays.
