West Pokot County Leaders Seek Inter-Government Intervention Amid Rising Insecurity

West Pokot County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif addressing the residents in the inter-governmental peace and security baraza at Kapushen Tapach ward

The leadership of West Pokot County has called for inter-governmental intervention to address the escalating insecurity that has severely impacted livelihoods in Pokot South Sub-County. Increased incidents of violence have led to loss of human lives, livestock theft, and the torching of homes.

County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif revealed that an inter-governmental peace and security Barraza was held in Kapushen Tapach Ward to discuss the security challenges affecting the area. “We visited Amani Primary School, Kamelei Milk Cooler, Kamelei Primary and Secondary Schools, and then addressed the Barraza at Katungoi within Kapushen area,” said Khalif. The visit aimed to assess the impact of insecurity on education and review the response of existing administrative units.

Following demonstrations by area residents, Khalif received delegations from local leadership and community members to discuss strengthening security measures. The County Security Committee has decided to expedite the vetting of previously trained National Police Service (NPS) personnel to issue firearms and deploy security officers to Kapushen Camps.

Khalif announced a partnership with West Pokot County Governor Simon Kachapin, who will provide a stipend for three months for the local NPS personnel. Peace committees will also be supported by the government to effectively undertake peace-building activities.

“We are going to enhance security patrols by security officers within these affected areas to ensure the safety and security of our people,” Khalif emphasized. He added that more relief food would be provided to vulnerable community members displaced by insecurity, and efforts would be made to assist affected schools.

The County Commissioner also called on Safaricom to improve network coverage in the area to enable security officers to request emergency responses when needed. Additionally, he highlighted an agreement among all leaders to set aside political differences and focus on fostering peace and development for the community.

Lelan Ward Representative James Kapeli praised the local administration for its efforts, and Wei-Wei Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) David Moiben also attended the meeting.

The concerted efforts by local leaders and government officials aim to restore peace and stability in West Pokot County, ensuring a safer environment for all residents.
