The return of Donald Trump to the White House has some Africans believe that Washington should continue to focus on geo-strategy and efforts to invest in parts of the continent and strengthen diplomatic ties in Africa. Others worry about possibly stricter migration policies and less cooperation with the continent.
With regard to the fundamental ideology at the heart of Trump’s policies, political analysts argue that, Trump is a believer of isolationism in every respect and an inwards person.
Biden has been more global, and stands for cooperation and partnerships, while Trump does not favour international cooperation with Africa.
Trump’s 2018 widely reported use of derogatory language to describe some parts of Africa while speaking against immigration from these countries, suggests how he doesn’t treat the continent with respect, undermines democratic ideals … what can Africa expect?
Donald Trump return to white house , in a country with the world’s largest economy, biggest military power with strategic alliances, currently supporting Israel and Ukraine wars , the victory of President Trump , could just be a turning point for US, with massive implications on how the Country is going to be governed in future.
Earlier the Trump administration announced that it would launch efforts to address the global criminalization of homosexuality. While primarily targeted at putting pressure on Iran, Africa was also on the agenda. Given the Trump administration’s track record on LGBT rights, it seems that the administration may engage the issue as a pretext for applying sanctions. Trump is not expected to expand his foreign and development policy in Africa.
President Trump would most likely focus on domestic policy and migration, particularly at the Mexican border, and ignore climate change. This could also have an impact on African countries. Shortly after taking office in 2021, Biden lifted the entry bans issued by Trump on countries with a Muslim-majority population.
Kenyans online shared mixed reactions, with some celebrating Trump’s victory and others expressing disappointment over Harris’s loss .Following the apparent victory, Kenyans have written a letter to President-elect Donald Trump requesting him to #RecallMegWhitman immediately.
In a letter on X “platform dated 6th November, 2024 read
Your excellency CONGRATULATIONS on your deserved victory.Republicanism is in born; where you love, defend and develop your motherland in diversity. Kenya too has majority who subscribe to your views on diverse issues including making a nation GREAT.
However, your excellency through unanimous US senate vote on 17th July 2022, to have Meg Whitman as an ambassador to Kenya, she has ruined our country through her purported support and aid to the ruling class to:kill, abduct, oppress, corrupt to manoeuvre in her evil deals and overwrite our constitution. All these aren’t and will never be associated with the great America.
Kenyans living in America and in Kenya loves and cherish you. Meg Whitman is evil. Kindly, order her back home to face justice.”
It is argued in the US that Trump had a rapport with President Putin of Russia ,that could very well resolve conflict in Europe between Russia and Ukraine. It must also be remembered that Trump once asked NATO to pick up the bill.
A Trump presidency may quicken the end of current Wars in the world. The are those who observe that, during Republican presidency they appear to support more programs than during the democratic presidency, full of rhetoric and short in action.
Many will be waiting to see the response of Trump’s administration on the Chinese influence on the African Continent particularly The China Road Belt. Will he continue with Lupito Corridor to assert American influence in Africa? Will the Trump administration counter Russian influence in the Sahael Region?
Africa remains the same but, sets a stage for a theatre of contestation for different powers.
